The importance of exfoliation

Updated: Feb 26, 2022

Exfoliation in simple terms means to remove the top dead layer of your skin. Timely and gentle exfoliation provides refreshed, clear and smooth skin and that is just the beginning, if done the right way over a period of time it also helps in rejuvenating your skin from within.

What are the benefits of regular exfoliation?

  1. Removes dead skin - provides a glowing and radiant skin.

  2. Unclogs the pores - it prevents the formation of white and black heads, hence the chances of reoccurrence of acne reduces.

  3. Dark and patchy skin - can be treated with the help of peels which help in removing the pigment deposited in the skin.

  4. Tanned or photodamaged skin - chemical peels can help in lightening the skin color by controlled removal of upper damaged skin layers which subsequently leads to generation of new skin from beneath , providing a fresh look.

  5. Reversing the signs of aging - stimulates production of collagen and hence also has anti-aging properties.

  6. Treatment of acne - Peels containing beta hydroxy acids, potassium iodide, black acetic acid etc. gives wonderful results for acne treatment.

Types of exfoliation - How is exfoliation done ?

Exfoliation can be physical exfoliation or chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation refers to the use of scrub agents to remove the top layers of the skin. Chemical exfoliation is the one which is usually done at the clinics by professional . So, what is the difference between chemical and physical exfoliation and why should one spend money on chemical exfoliation if scrubbing at home provides the same benefits.

So, chemical exfoliation has the advantage of being more controlled form of exfoliation, so depending on the skin type, dry or oily or normal, skin color, tanned or not the doctor will decide the type and depth of peeling agents.

Type of peeling agents

The peeling agents are many in the market, they can be mainly classified into Alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids. The leader in Alpha hydroxy group is glycolic acid , which is an absolutely wonderful molecule as it can act as exfoliant with humectant (moisturizer) if used in right concentration and time. The beta hydroxy group consists of salicylic acid preparations which is more useful for oily, acne prone skin.

There are several newer peeling agents in market like Ferrulac peel, yellow (retinoid) peel, enzyme peels etc. These are newer category of peels which are liposomal in nature. Which means that they bind to your skin molecules and penetrate deeper but are very gentle at the same time with chance of side effects being very less.

Do not try chemical peels at home.

Chemical peels are a wonderful tool only if used after proper training and knowledge. It can lead to adverse reactions like permanent hyperpigmentation (dark patches), scarring or depigmentation (white patches) on the skin. So, please do not try this at home and land up with some permanent skin issue.
