Uncover the Hidden Signs: How Your Skin Might Indicate a Risk of Diabetes

Our body is like an orchestra, where all our organs work in harmony with each other with a common goal: to keep the body healthy and alive.

Skin is the largest and most visible organ of our body and if you listen and notice the signs skin shows, you can judge the internal status of our health.

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, which helps in controlling our blood sugar, by pushing the glucose generated by food from the bloodstream into the cells, thereby lowering the levels of glucose and putting the glucose molecules to use in the cells.

Slowly, sometimes our bodies stop responding to the insulin being manufactured and the sugar levels stay high in the bloodstream. This is called insulin resistance which translates into diabetes later if persistent and progressive.

The signs of insulin resistance are visible on our skin and this could help in early management of the condition. Obvioussigns of insulin resistance include weight gain, obesity, pot belly, and buffalo hump neck.

Our skin will show signs like -

  1. Darkening of folds- due to insulin resistance, skin multiplies and becomes thicker. Due to the thickness of the skin, folds of the body like underarms, neck, and groins appear darker.

2. Facial darkening - Asian skin is prone to get darker, especially in the temples and forehead areas.

3. Skin tags - small skin-colored or slightly dark-colored swellings might develop over underarms, neck, and groins. These look like small lesions (one-fourth the size of a pea) maybe even smaller, skin or darker colored ones over the folds, slowly they become bigger with stalk.

Watch out for these signs in your body. If you are developing pigmentation over the neck or underarms, that might be the earliest sign that your body is under threat of developing a metabolic disorder.

Now, these signs not only indicate diabetes, but it is also signs of many other diseases called metabolic disorders.

Metabolic disorder means, that our bodies are not able to maintain the normal metabolic state and are not able to digest or break our food properly into macronutrients and micronutrients, which can slow down the activity of our body mechanics leading to

  • Weight gain

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes

  • Hypertension

  • Thyroid disorder

  • Polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD)

How can you avoid becoming a prey to metabolic disorder?

Below are the risk factors to avoid, if you want to lead a healthy life.

Weight gain is the precursor to all the problems.

Contrary to what is usually thought, weight gain is not only due to increased calorie intake, it is majorly a hormonal and stress disorder.

Decreased physical activity, prolonged sitting, or a sedentary lifestyle with stress and smoking contribute to a higher tendency to gain those extra kilos.

And increasing indulgence in social media is leading to insomnia and depression in many causing further decreased physical activity!!

Listen to your skin, it is telling you so much about what's happening inside our bodies. If you have any of the signs told above, here are few things which will help

  1. Start exercsing - could be anything from 20 minutes to 40 minutes a day, from 4-6 days a week. Any form of exercise - walking, jogging, zumba , cardio or weight trainig would help.

  2. Be active throughout the day- even during working hours , try to walk for every half an hour for 2 to 3 minutes.

  3. Healthy food -including fresh vegetables, fruits instead of frozen food will help in boosting metabolism and nutrition.

  4. Redcued stress

  5. Better sleep

  6. yoga and meditation
